Dr. Karola Rehnström

Scientific Project Manager

I coordinate clinical and academic large-scale research projects

During my PhD in genetics, which I did at the University of Helsinki in the field of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) genetics, I also co-ordinated the sample collection of the Finnish cohort for the 1000 Genomes project. During my Postdoc at the Sanger Institute I worked on the neuropsychiatric arm of the UK10K project. My latest role was Programme Lead for the 100,000 Genomes Project at the East of England NHS Genomic Medicine Centre, working across five university hospitals in the East of England. The next logical step in my career would be to contribute to a project with a million genomes.

I am part of a design team for a small, family-run papercrafting company so I spend a lot of time in my craft room, designing cards or knitting. I’m kept company while crafting by my Brazilian Rainbow Boa named Gary.
